Petition to Make Black Lives Matter at School in PISD

The Issue

The climate in our nation has changed in response to the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and countless other black Americans. Racism in our country is nothing new, it has laid dormant until the recent killings of innocent black people.

PISD is a multifaceted district but can often fall short when educating students on matters of race (in exception of slavery and the Civil Rights Era). All black history is American history. It's important for students to understand racism and the effects of it, especially because many of us and our families experience it on a regular basis. One step towards understanding racism is to start having uncomfortable conversations and educating.

Black Lives Matter at School is a national union that annually recognizes the first week of February as a week of action to educate students, teachers, and communities about racial justice in education. The educators who have created this coalition compose free lesson plans for grades K-12 to be shared with schools across America. Over the span of one week, students are educated about the BLM movement, police brutality, structural racism and more topics that are often left out in our curriculum. In order for this week of action to function, teachers appointed by the administration should partake in ensuring the curriculum is taught to its full extent.
