This afternoon, Claire spoke with Julie O'Connor, the Senior Manager for Land for Wildlife at SCRC. Julie contacted WRSC to ask for any data were are willing to share regarding wildlife HOT SPOTS.
Apparently, Council will be engaging GHD Consultants to carry out a Fauna Movement Study. The study will take about 12 months due to 'monitoring'. WRSC have offered our services to speed the process up and in doing so, reduce the cost.
We know what we need. Wide over-passes like the example at Compton Road, Brisbane with accompanying underpasses. These access routes need to be able to actively funnel the roos and other critters across the danger areas, therefore, exclusion fencing will also be required to prevent animals straying onto the road.
We know where the HOT SPOTS are. Whilst its good to hear that Council are doing 'something', for current developments and the 34+ kangaroo and wallaby lives lost in June alone (and there's many more than that that AZWH have been out to) it's too little too late. That horse has bolted and the stable door is closed.
Time is of the essence - if we are going to save our local roos and put an end to the 'self-dispersal' policy adopted by SCRC, we must push for an expediated process.
The Fauna Movement study will cost an arm and leg, make no mistake.
The quickest way to understand how these animals are moving is;
1) Find where they are (ah yes, on land ear-marked for development)
2) Assess their movement options once development starts
3) Mitigate risk by creating a way to control where you want them to go
4) If it is to a green area bisected by a road - build a tunnel or overpass
5) If it is to a neighbouring 'green-field' area mitigate any risk of straying onto a dangerous road by erecting exclusion fencing.Or, combine the two.
6) Cancel your entry exam to become a Rocket Scientist
You don't need a string of degrees if you implement common sense and engage with those who are working daily in the field.
We have supplied an initial set of statistics to Julie O'Connor. Our feeling is, if Council wants to use our statistics then we should be part of the solution. We are saving rate payers money by offering our help.
Please continue to share our petition because if we rest and become complacent the roos will be gone and nothing will bring them back.
Thank you for your continued support.
