Google: stop your censored search engine.

The Issue

Google’s Project Dragonfly is an upcoming search engine in partnership with the Chinese Communist Party. It censors search results like “Tiananmen Square” and “peaceful protest.”

Project Dragonfly exists because China won't otherwise give Google access to their massive Chinese market.

If deployed in mainland China, Google will become another instrument for the Communist Party’s crimes against humanity and propaganda, including but not limited to the Tiananmen Square Massacre, re-education camps for Chinese Muslims, and the recent incarcerations and murders of several journalists criticizing arbitrary arrest and imprisonment.

Tell Google that this kind of manipulation is not okay, especially for a search engine that billions access daily.

In 2010, Sergey Brin—Google’s cofounder—vetoed a similarly censored search engine proposal, citing how the proposal could strengthen Google’s reliance on China and create political leverage for the Chinese Communist Party. Recently, a petition against Project Dragonfly circulated within Google itself and garnered 1600 signatures by its own employees.

Here are some examples of the Chinese Communist Party illegally blackmailing companies for political benefit:

• Several major airlines, including American and Lufthansa, were coerced into recognizing Taiwan as a Chinese province under threat of halting all flights to the mainland.

• YouTube removed search suggestions for China Uncensored, a channel dedicated to debunking claims by Chinese state-run media.

• In an unholy exchange of intellectual property for market rights, China regularly uses Apple’s reliance on their markets to steal IP and make clones of their products, including iPhones and Macbook Pros.

Google is just the next in a long line of companies capitulating to the Chinese Communist Party.

Don’t allow Project Dragonfly. Tell Sundar Pichai, President John Hennessey and Ann Mather that Sergey Brin was right.

Sign now to let Google know that it's not okay to help continue China's abuse of their own people and blackmail of foreign companies.
