On December 18th, 2024, despite years of well documented public opposition to Dakota Pacific Real Estate's (Dakota Pacific's) bids to rezone and redevelop the Kimball Junction area "tech park," Summit County Council voted 4-1 to approve Ordinance No. 987, allowing the project to go forward.
The Council vote countervails majority voter sentiment and the "health, safety, and general welfare" of citizens by allowing Dakota to add significant residential and commercial density on parcels otherwise bound by a valid development agreement prohibiting additional residential density according to its land use table and limiting the uses for commercial space.
While the 4-1 Council vote for the project was a major slap in the face to the community, not all hope is lost. In fact, 7 courageous local citizens recently launched a signature gathering effort that, if successful, will put the ordinance to a referendum and thereby allow voters to once and for all overturn Ordinance No. 987 and oblige the County to review all current and future applications for development on the "tech park" parcels according to the bounds of the original development agreement..
To get this matter on the ballot, we will need 5,000 physical signatures and we need yours to be one of them! Volunteers are collecting signatures every day around the County. You can see the up-to-date list of locations where you sign here:

Please note: This is a manual petition gathering effort, and signatures can only be rendered in person in an official petition packet and only registered voters who live in Summit County, UT are eligible to sign the petition.
Side note: True to form, Dakota Pacific is playing dirty and recently launched a deceptive misinformation campaign to sabotage the referendum petition. Specifically, last week, a group of Dakota Pacific executives launched an anonymous group urging residents to reject the referendum. Luckily the local press quickly uncovered the true identity of the backers of this sabotage initiative, but keep in mind that these are the types of people we are dealing with.
