Subway, it’s time to stop caging animals in Indonesia!

The Issue

Indonesian version is here.

Subway, one of the largest global fast food chains, just entered Indonesia and has become loved by many Indonesians in a short time. But did you know that Subway does not use the same standards in our country as it does elsewhere? Subway has announced a commitment to stop buying egg and egg products from farms that keep hens in cages in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines, Vietnam, Taiwan, South Korea, North America, Europe, Australia and New Zealand. But on the company's websites, there are NO commitments for Indonesia. We tried to contact Subway to ask them about this, but they simply do not respond. We can only conclude from the silence that Subway does not have a commitment for Indonesia.

You might ask: why should Subway commit to moving away from cages? Most hens in the egg industry in Indonesia are kept in the battery cage system, which is horrible for the hens and can pose a risk to public health!

In a battery cage, each hen is confined to a space smaller than a piece of A4 paper. Hens usually like to build nests, dust bathe, flap their wings, and stretch their legs and wings completely. But in cages, there’s not enough space for them to perform these behaviors that are crucial for their wellbeing.

And yes, human health is at risk too! Major studies found evidence that points to a higher prevalence of Salmonella bacteria in cage systems when compared to cage-free systems. Salmonella poisoning can be fatal in adults older than 65 years, children younger than five years, and people with weakened immune systems—and it’s unpleasant for everyone.

Conventional battery cages are so outdated and they are already banned in the European Union, New Zealand, Canada, Israel, and Australia. In Indonesia, local companies including Ismaya Group and Hokkaido Baby have already declared their cage-free commitment. What is Subway waiting for? Subway has to say no to cages in Indonesia now!

Let's ask Subway to be kinder to animals and to use the same standards for Indonesia they use elsewhere by committing to stop using eggs from battery cage systems. Sign this petition and share it on your social media!
