Substitute the circuit boards with Spray Wall at Mesa Rim @ Mission Valley

Substitute the circuit boards with Spray Wall at Mesa Rim @ Mission Valley
The Issue
To the Mesa Rim team,
We're a group of members and regulars at Mission Valley, and we wanted to put together something more formal around an idea that's been floating around for a while — swapping out the circuit board for a spray wall. We think it's a real opportunity for the gym, and we'd love for you to hear us out.
What the circuit board is good for
We're not here to trash the circuit board — it does its job. It works well for:
- Beginners getting their footing
- Warming up before a session
- Endurance training with laps
That said, it's a pretty focused tool. Outside of those three things, it doesn't leave a lot of room to grow.
Why a spray wall makes sense
A spray wall would cover everything the circuit board already does, but it opens the door to a lot more:
- It's still useful for beginners, warm-ups, and endurance
- It gives stronger climbers a place to really push themselves creatively
- It naturally gets people thinking like setters — building problems, reading movement, experimenting with sequences
- It could be a great training ground for Mesa Rim's own setting culture, both for the community and internally
(Note: Gyms in places like Boulder, Salt Lake City, Portland, London, Sheffield, and Tokyo have made spray walls a big part of what makes them stand out. We think Mission Valley has the community to be in that same conversation)
We're not here to tell you how to set it or what holds to use — that's your call. We just want to make the case for having the tool available.
Being honest about the downsides
The Moonboard and Kilter Board area can already get crowded at peak times, and adding a spray wall could worsen that down the line.
That said, it's not something that would happen overnight. New tools take time to catch on, so there'd be plenty of runway to figure out the layout before it becomes a real issue.
What we're asking
Simply put — give the spray wall some serious consideration. We'd love to be part of that conversation if it's helpful, whether that's feedback, ideas on placement, or just showing up and supporting it.
Thanks for everything you put into making this gym what it is. We wouldn't be writing this if we didn't care about the place.
