Mr. Perucco is a teacher at Minnetonka who is currently facing a lot of backlash for teaching his students about Black transgender activist Marsha P. Johnson. Anti-equity parents are calling for his resignation, citing that he violated school policies by promoting political ideologies/figures. These accusations are unfounded and inaccurate, because a) LGBTQ+ rights is not a political issue, and b) there was nothing profane, inappropriate, or otherwise controversial about his lesson.

The school board’s #2 goal is to promote excellence and belonging. By raising awareness about LGBTQ+ activists, Mr. Perucco directly creates a sense of belonging among Minnetonka's LGBTQ+ community.

“All of us Minnetonka students appreciate what you have done in terms of sharing diverse history and uplifting important historical figures. Informing students about the activism and legacy of minority leaders helps many students feel appreciated, acknowledged, and safe. Everyone deserves to have their side of history taught in a school environment.” — Excerpt from a letter in support of Mr. Perucco, currently with over 60 student signatures.

Dismissing Mr. Perucco would not only drive away a beloved teacher, but would also send a direct message to your LGBTQ+ students telling them that their rights are not supported at Minnetonka. Skippers are taught to always do the right thing. Standing up against transphobia and homophobia is the right thing. Supporting a teacher who has done so much for his students and community is the right thing.

We, the members of Minnetonka, urge that the school board allow Mr. Perucco to keep his job and protect his right to teach our students about these important topics. Please show your support for Mr. Perucco by signing this petition. We also encourage everyone to write to the Minnetonka School Board in defense of Mr. Perucco.
