The Issue

Recently it was made public that two valuable instructors, Dr. Trevor Carlisle and Dr. Natasha Malette, were notified that their yearly instructor contracts will be terminated June 15th, 2020. This was done with minimal input from the faculty members within the school of Chemical, Biological, and Environmental Engineering. Terminating these instructors’ contracts is a disservice to the students and to the School of CBEE, but doing this amidst Covid-19 is a disgrace. Attempting to replace these experienced instructors will take time and money - two resources that could be used towards helping students and the community. As students prepare to enter an economy heavily impacted by Covid-19, we need these industry professionals now more than ever.

Dr. Mallette and Dr. Carlisle serves as the School of CBEE’s only professional practice engineers. They have invaluable insight and are the source of many students’ successes. Their hard work and dedication to chemical engineering, professionalism, and most importantly their students make them irreplaceable.

Dr. Carlisle obtained his B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering from OSU in 2006, and returned as an instructor in 2016. Since then, he has taught or co-taught the following classes: Safety, Engineering Ethics and Professionalism; Transport Phenomena Laboratory; Chemical Reaction Engineering; Process Dynamics; Process Controls; and Chemical Engineering Laboratory (senior lab). His attention to detail and organization has structured class content to be easily accessible to students, and his explanations are always thorough and complete.

Dr. Mallette arrived at OSU in 2016 and has taught and co-taught the following courses: Engineering Problem Solving and Computations; Process Engineering Laboratory; and Plant Design 1 and 2. She is also an advisor for Plastics Processing projects and the High Altitude Rocketry Team, and is highly involved with Womxn in Engineering / Womxn’s History Month events. Her patience, wit, and advice are treasured by the student body, but what makes her truly one-of-a-kind is her ability to relate to students and make them feel heard.
