An Open Letter from the Walnut Hills High School Student Congress Executive Board
The Issue
The Student Body at Walnut Hills High School has taken much notice at the recent decision to cut all student printing capabilities at all CPS school facilities. As technology advances and becomes a larger part of the Walnut Hills curriculum, so does the need to print documents at school. From English essays to Mathematics problem sets, there is a major need to print at Walnut Hills High School, and the decision to restrict printing access has only hindered the education process of our great students. The Walnut Hills High School Student Body is proud to be a highly diverse, academically gifted group of students that hail from many different socioeconomic backgrounds, something that this recent cut completely undermines. According to a report done by “Cartridge World,” with a cheap printer (under $200), the average cost per page using black ink is 5.5 cents and the average cost per page in color is 8.9 cents. A more expensive printer (more than $200) typically costs 3.9 cents using black ink and 8.3 cents using color ink. Such a cost is not economically viable for many families at Walnut Hills High School, and Cincinnati Public Schools as a whole, making it impossible for students to submit assignments and pursue their academic goals without printing access at school. At the Number 1 Ranked School in Ohio by the U.S. News & World Report, where every day in and out we learn by the Walnut Hills motto “Sursum ad Summum,” literally translated as “rise to the highest” and by the Cincinnati Public Schools vision of “a community that ensures equitable access to a world-class education, unleashing the potential of every student” students should not have to worry about how they can print out their next school assignment without access to a printer at home or the monetary funds to consistently pay to print from an outside source. We call for the immediate reestablishment of Student Printing Access and the annulment of this budget cut, for the greater good of every single student at Walnut Hills High School, and Cincinnati Public Schools as a whole.
Sincerely,
The Walnut Hills High School Student Congress Executive Board
