Students Demand Stricter Gun Control

Us students demand schools in America to provide a safe educational environment. However, awareness of recent homicides in the past couple of years urges us to take proactive measures to prevent such incidents from recurring. According to a CNN article, as of January 11 2024, there have already been two school shootings in the US this year; the other two had  occurred on K–12 school property. CNN's analysis indicates that these occurrences resulted in one death and at least eight injuries. The article includes all incidents of gun violence on school property with at least one person being shot. School gun violence decreased during the first year of the pandemic while schools shut down, but following years especially 2021, 2022, and 2023 set records going back at least to 2008. There were at least 82 cases in 2023 alone. With approximately 67 deaths and 158 injured in 2022, including the horrific massacre at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, resulting in an extremely terrible year. These alarming numbers highlight the importance of reducing and preventing gun violence. To guarantee the well-being of every member of our school communities, we require immediate action.

Each morning, the fear of a potential school shooting weighs heavily on students across the country. It was a stage of life when young people accepted this kind of behavior as the usual, and grew used to hearing gunshots, seeing individuals die, and hearing news stories of shootings in their city. It shouldn't be necessary for us students to live in fear in order to pursue our education. We should be able to get a safe education at school without having to worry about potential shootings. The shocking frequency of school shootings around the country has created an atmosphere of constant terror, making it challenging for us to concentrate on our academics and feel safe in our classroom. Recent incidents, like the tragedy at Uvalde, Texas' Robb  Elementary School serves as disturbing reminders that gun violence still has a destructive effect on schools. On May 24, 2022, 21 people, including 19 innocent children were killed at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas. Salvador Ramos, the shooter, purchases a Daniel Defense AR-15-style weapon on May 16 after he reaches the legal age of 18 in Texas to purchase firearms. Afterwards, he shoots his grandma in the face, takes her truck, and heads to Robb Elementary School. However on the way, he forces the taken vehicle into a ditch close to the school. Rising from the wreckage, he pulls three handgun shots, hitting two of the men who were witnessing. At around 11:33 AM the gunman enters the school, firing shots, breaking into classrooms. The children hid in fear, screaming, crouched under desks far from windows. Some hushed classmates who were screaming in agonizing pain from bullets that tore through their little bodies. A student quotes "I played dead so he wouldn't shoot me," A surviving teacher said “I felt that if I am not there, who will be there to protect the children," That day, some students as well as teachers entered the school without realizing it would be their last visit. Imagine the heartbreaking scene where bright young minds, full of hopes and dreams, are forced to face the terrible reality of hearing gunshots echoing through the hallways. The miserable acceptance of violence as the new normal overwhelmed young people's innocence. The story is unpleasant, with the sounds of terror echoing in place instead of sounds of laughter and education. Although everyone gets impacted differently by gun violence, many of the kids say they feel "numb" to the violence they've seen. This heart-breaking story covered the school in blood and left many with a void in their hearts from losing their loved ones.

Children exposed to gun violence may face numerous mental and behavioral health issues, such as depression, anxiety, social isolation, PTSD also known as post-traumatic stress disorder, phobias, panic attacks, survivor’s guilt and more. Even after the gunfire stops, mass shootings can have lasting traumatizing consequences. The psychological aftermath from these horrific events affects individuals, their loved ones, communities, and the nation as a whole. According to experts, everyone's mental health is being impacted by the frequent mass shootings and the wide-ranging media coverage of these incidents. People can witness real, sometimes quite disturbing footage of gun violence on social media, sometimes even in real time during a shooting. These incidents are not limited to being published by cautious news sources. Stress levels might increase according to the amount of attention that a shooting receives. Images that are graphic may worsen the situation. Drills with active shooters, other emergency situations, and even the sound of an emergency alarm can trigger individuals impacted. PTSD symptoms include emotional numbness, nightmares, flashbacks, avoiding situations that cause thoughts about the traumatic incident. Moreover, a sense of weakness, anxiety, and hopelessness can all be signs of depression in this situation. Suicidal thoughts may occur from survivors of mass shootings feeling guilty about being alive while others were killed in the dreadful event. This condition is known as "survivor's guilt." It can also cause panic attacks which make you feel as if you’re out of control. Doing research for this paper I found a quote which made me feel goosebumps all over my body. “I tried to forget everything. People wanted to help me forget because loud sounds would make me really upset, and I couldn't even breathe or think. It's also tough for me to learn, make friends, or trust what I think is real.” said a young survivor from the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. If you never cared about this topic I hope this will awaken a sense in you. It's difficult for students to attend school after incidents like this. The reminders of the traumatic event are always present in the walls of the school so the number of absences rises in the aftermath.

In conclusion, immediate action is required to establish safer educational environments due to the alarming reality of school shootings. The horrific incident at Robb Elementary School and other recent incidents emphasize how urgently this situation has to be addressed. The impact on survivors' mental health and the widespread anxiety among students highlight the necessity of change. Mass shootings have a wider effect and increase mental health issues that impact both individuals and communities. This is due in part to media coverage of the incidents. We cannot allow schools to become settings in which violence is accepted as daily life, distracting students from their studies and establishing an atmosphere of fear. Now is the moment when we must put students' safety and wellbeing first. Let's unite to speak up and fight. The future belongs to us - let's make it a safe one.
