Centennial High School Immediate Mask Mandate (Frisco ISD)
The Issue
Every day we come to school and risk our health (and even lives) by being surrounded by students and staff who are unmasked. As the confirmed cases of COVID-19 rise at our school, no action has been taken by the district or the school to mitigate the impact the virus has on our lives.
Social distancing has proven itself unattainable and unrealistic at our campus. We are forced to sit next to, walk by, and interact with peers and teachers who choose to not wear masks at our school. By simply walking in the hallways at Centennial High School, we are forced to put our health and the health of our families on the line to get to our next class period. It's hard to focus on school work and learning with that lingering anxiety.
We understand that vaccines are effective at slowing the spread of COVID-19, but the new variant has proven itself resistant to vaccinations and boosters alike. As we know, Centennial High School and Frisco Independent School District does not require COVID-19 vaccinations, making our school population that much more vulnerable to a COVID-19 outbreak.
We understand the legal situation into which Frisco ISD is situated. However, as of two months ago, Governor Greg Abbott's Executive Order GA-38 was overturned by U.S. District Judge Lee Yeakel, therefore making mask mandate bans unenforceable. Additionally, the Texas appeals court has recently allowed Harris County to impose mask mandates, upholding the decision made by Judge Lee Yeakel.
We aren't asking for a vaccine mandate. We aren't even asking for the measures that CHS has 'implemented' to be enforced. We are asking for a mask mandate to be put in place immediately for the remainder of the school year to ensure the health of our classmates and teachers and their families are prioritized over politics. We are asking for action.
Frisco ISD aims know every student by name and need. This is our need.
