Student Fees. Student Freedom.

-I affirm the importance of student organizations' contributions to campus life and the university experience, and
-I firmly believe that all student organizations, regardless of total membership, should retain their present and longstanding ability to request funding allocated to support those student activities that encourage broad student participation and interest and/or serve to contribute to the intellectual development of the students, and
-I affirm the proven ability of the student-led process to review requests from and allocate appropriate funding to all qualifying student activities while complying with existing policies requiring said funds to be distributed in a viewpoint neutral manner, and
-I firmly believe that students should continue to self-govern the allocation of their applicable funds since students themselves best understand the needs of the student body, and
-I firmly believe that legislation governing funding to student activities would unnecessarily constrict the longstanding freedom of students to associate together as student organizations and to promote events that further their freedom of speech, and
Let it be known, that I, a concerned citizen:
1. Find that no compelling governmental interest exists to permit state interference with the current student control of the distribution of student paid fees, and
2. Find that, because funds are and have been distributed in a viewpoint neutral manner, I feel that the university is well within its rights to require all students to continue to pay the student activity fee, and
3. Oppose the 108th Tennessee General Assembly's Senate Bill 1608 and any other legislative act that would reduce or interfere with the student body's existing ability to self-allocate funds for student activities or that would otherwise interfere with the ability of all students and their student organizations to exercise their United States and Tennessee constitutional rights of free speech and free association.
