It’s at the top of every news bulletin and site in Australia: Cardinal George Pell’s appeal to overturn his convictions for sexually abusing two choirboys has been dismissed.
Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Anne Ferguson, President of the Court of Appeal Justice Chris Maxwell and Justice Mark Weinberg handed down their decision to a packed courtroom. This decision means that Cardinal Pell is heading back to prison to serve out his six-year jail term.
Earlier this year, the PM Scott Morrison indicated that he “will move to strip Cardinal George Pell of his Order of Australia honour if Australia’s most senior Catholic loses his appeal against his conviction of five child sexual assault charges.” (The Guardian, 27/2/19)
That time is now.
Right now, can you quickly pick up the phone to call the Office of the Prime Minister and Cabinet and respectfully ask that the PM make good on his promise?
It will take you less than two minutes - a small amount of time to send a powerful message to survivors of sexual abuse.
- Call 02 6271 5111, the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet.
- Respectfully ask the Prime Minister act to remove Pell’s undeserved Companion of the Order of Australia.
- Ask for action so that we might restore honour to the honours list.
- Thank the person for their time, and always be polite and respectful.
You’re one of 212,112 people standing up for survivors of sexual abuse. Thank you.
