Strengthen Security at all WJUSD/Woodland Schools

Strengthen Security at all WJUSD/Woodland Schools
The Issue
In light of the horrific events of the school shooting at Uvalde, Texas a number of parents across Woodland are realizing how easy it would be for a similar act of terror to occur within our own community -- due simply to security vulnerabilities that currently exist in the access points/points of entry into our many schools throughout Woodland.
Parents with children in nursery, pre-school, elementary, jr. high and high schools are realizing how easy it would be for a predator in our community to enter our schools -- often times completely undetected -- and cause great harm to our children and school staff similar to the nightmare in Uvalde.
Ideas to strengthen security by tightening access to enter our school facilities could include (but not limited to):
- secured external doors/entry points that require authorized parent/guardian passcode or swipe card to enter the facility (while not inhibiting easy exit from within in the case of emergency and urgent exit needs)
- alert sound that signals when someone has entered the school facility
- security guards and/or monitors at all entry points
We hope that with your signature on this petition, we can show WJUSD schools and all private schools across Woodland that there is significant collective agreement on the need to address security vulnerabilities, as well as a desire and will from concerned parents across the city to partner with the district and schools to immediately upgrade our security protocol and implement this protocol to correct some of these basic vulnerabilities that exist in our school facilities today.
We strongly encourage this partnership to avoid taking political stances -- we recognize that gun law, mental health outreach and the myriad of other causes of this school shooting epidemic are complex social issues that cannot be resolved overnight. In the immediate sense, we must recognize that we cannot control for all circumstances, but there are some basic and foundational things we can all collectively do now in Woodland to prevent predator access to our schools and provide greater peace of mind for the school staff, children and parents/guardians in our city of Woodland.
