The Issue

Willow Crawford's bright future was overshadowed by many things. In honor of Willow we would like to create Willow's Wish #24. This will focus on bullying. Every day, youth face verbal antagonism, online harassment, and social isolation across Indiana. Willow's story is a heartbreaking reminder of an ongoing crisis that touches homes and schools across the state. Despite her courage in openly sharing her struggles with friends and family, there was no effective intervention. Unfortunately, current Indiana laws insufficiently address bullying, especially in holding parents responsible for their children's behavior.

The aftermath of Willow’s suicide serves as a wake-up call. Bullying is not "just a part of growing up"; it is a dangerous form of abuse that can have devastating impacts on a child's mental health and well-being. The legislation in Indiana lacks the robust framework necessary to combat bullying efficiently. Importantly, it fails to adequately engage parents in the resolution process. Parents play a critical role in shaping the behavior of their children, and they must be part of the solution.

Research indicates that over 20% of students ages 12-18 experience bullying in some form. Furthermore, the effects of bullying can lead to severe anxiety, depression, and tragically, suicide. Willow’s struggle is an unfortunate reality faced by many. It is time to create a legislative environment that prioritizes the health and safety of our youth.

To address these issues, we propose a new law to Indiana's bullying laws to include comprehensive measures that hold parents accountable. Recommended changes include: establishing a mandatory program for parents of those found guilty of bullying, instituting tiered penalties for continued non-compliance, and requiring schools to report repeated offenses to child protective services.

By updating these legal frameworks, we would not only deter bullying but also foster a collaborative environment where parents, schools, and communities work together to instill the values of respect and empathy in our children.

In memory of Willow Crawford and thousands like her, let us take action now. Join us in urging the Indiana state legislature to amend the bullying laws and create Willow's Wish #24. Please sign this petition to create a safer and more supportive environment for our children.
