Strengthen Child Support Enforcement Laws in Colorado

The Issue

As a single mother in Colorado, my struggle has been relentless due to a lack of support from my children's fathers. Every day I juggle two jobs, worried about how to feed my children, their need for new clothes and shoes, and school supplies often fall further down the list of things I can afford. Despite working seven days a week, my income is insufficient to meet all their needs. I am not alone; numerous parents in Colorado face this distressing reality. It's time for a change.

There’s an urgent need to strengthen and strictly enforce child support laws in Colorado. We demand a system where penalties and interests are applied monthly to any past due child support. This financial pressure could prompt a greater commitment from non-custodial parents.

Beyond financial enforcement, stronger penalties should be brought against negligent parents. We propose penalties ranging from work release programs to jail time for those who continually evade their responsibilities. These laws need to be geared towards helping the custodial parent, who often bears the brunt of the financial responsibility.

It’s alarming how prevalent this issue is. According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, there's approximately $114 billion in unpaid child support debts across the United States. Isn’t it time that Colorado takes a stand against this nationwide issue?

We cannot continue to allow parents to not support their children, shirking responsibilities and leaving their families to struggle. Let's fight for a system that values each child’s right to support from both parents.

Stand with us to transform the law.Let’s build a fairer Colorado for struggling single parents and their children. Please sign this petition and support this critical cause.
