The issue

For a long time, I have been deeply concerned about the current state of our oceans and the dwindling fish populations. What keeps me up at night is knowing that illegal fishing practices and environmental abuse continue to happen unchecked. I strongly believe that a major step towards changing this is for the New Zealand government to enforce stronger and stricter laws regarding cameras on fishing boats and vessels.

Recent reports have shown that illegal fishing practices continue to plague our waters, leading to severe implications not only for marine life but also for the local communities that depend on fisheries for their livelihood. In 2019, an estimated 11-26 million tonnes of fish are illegally caught globally each year, representing 12-28% of global seafood value. Enforcing a comprehensive surveillance system is crucial in combatting these unlawful practices and promoting sustainable fishing that benefits all.

While the current legislation mandates cameras on vessels, it lacks the necessary rigor and enforcement to ensure accountability and transparency. Without stringent regulations and frequent checks, these measures can easily be circumvented, allowing for continued illegal activity. We need stronger laws that not only mandate the presence of these cameras but also require regular inspections and severe penalties for non-compliance.

Implementing stricter camera laws would not only deter illegal activities but also protect marine biodiversity, ensuring a more sustainable future. The cameras could act as an ever-present deterrent against illegal fishing methods, overfishing, and other harmful practices.

I urge everyone who cares about the health of our oceans and adherence to legal practices to support this cause. Sign this petition to demand the New Zealand government to strengthen and enforce the laws regarding cameras on fishing vessels and ensure the protection of our precious marine resources for generations to come.
