Strengthen BC's Wildfire Response Now!
The Issue
We, concerned citizens of British Columbia, demand immediate action from the provincial government to allocate more resources towards developing a robust initial attack program. It is crucial for our province to be proactive in fighting wildfires and protecting our communities, wildlife, and natural resources.
Wildfires have become an increasingly frequent and devastating occurrence in British Columbia. In recent years, we have witnessed the destructive power of these fires firsthand. The 2017 wildfire season alone burned over 1.2 million hectares of land, making it one of the worst seasons on record (source: BC Wildfire Service).
Despite the alarming increase in wildfire activity, our province's initial attack program remains under-resourced and ill-equipped to handle such emergencies effectively. Insufficient funding has resulted in delayed response times and limited capacity to contain fires during their early stages when they are most manageable.
According to a report by the Forest Practices Board (source: Forest Practices Board Annual Report), only 50% of wildfires were contained at less than four hectares in size during the 2019 fire season. This indicates a significant gap in our ability to swiftly respond and suppress fires before they escalate into uncontrollable infernos.
By investing more resources into developing a proper initial attack program, we can significantly enhance our ability to combat wildfires at their inception. This includes increasing funding for additional firefighting personnel, specialized equipment like helicopters and air tankers for rapid deployment, as well as improving training programs for firefighters.
A proactive approach is not only essential for safeguarding lives but also critical for preserving our environment and economy. The devastating impact of wildfires extends beyond immediate destruction; it affects air quality, water sources, wildlife habitats, tourism revenue streams – all elements that contribute significantly to British Columbia's prosperity.
We call upon Premier David Eby his government officials to prioritize public safety by allocating adequate resources towards strengthening BC's wildfire response. By doing so, we can mitigate the devastating consequences of wildfires and protect our beautiful province for generations to come.
Sign this petition now to demand immediate action and ensure that British Columbia has a well-equipped initial attack program capable of proactively fighting wildfires!
