A man in Bexar County was arrested after investigators found starving dogs, over 60 neglected chickens, and video of him strangling a dog and forcing roosters to fight. This level of cruelty is horrifying, and it is not the first time animals have suffered like this in Texas.

Current laws are not enough. In many cases, people charged with serious animal abuse face little jail time and are allowed to own animals again. That puts more animals at risk.

We need stronger animal cruelty laws in Texas. That includes tougher penalties for cockfighting, mandatory prison time for repeat offenders, and clear rules that ban abusers from owning pets again.

Animals depend on us to speak up for them. They feel pain, fear, and suffering just like we do. No dog should be chained up and starving. No chicken should be forced to fight for someone’s entertainment.

Lawmakers in Texas must act. These crimes should never be treated lightly. People who hurt animals should face real consequences.
