StopTheSludge!! No North Kingstown Sewer Sludge Processing Plant!
The Issue
STOP THE SLUDGE: Protect North Kingstown... Rhode Island QSS Biosolids, LLC is proposing to build the largest sewage sludge pyrolysis facility ever attempted in the United States at 135 All American Way in North Kingstown's Quonset Business Park, which is in many of our back yards. Here's what this means for our community: 159 tons of sewage sludge processed per day. 40 truckloads of heavily toxic sludge hauled through our neighborhoods daily. Operations running 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management has permitted the facility to emit up to 83 pounds of mercury and 2,005 pounds of hydrogen cyanide into the air per year with no economically feasible technology to control it. This facility sits directly above North Kingstown's sole-source drinking water aquifer, the same groundwater our families depend on every day. The pyrolysis technology being proposed is experimental and unreliable. The few comparable facilities that exist in the U.S. are far smaller in scale — and two have already failed. Our community should not be the testing ground for an unproven industrial operation of this magnitude. We are calling on Governor McKee and state officials to halt this project and protect our air, our water, and our families. Sign this petition to add your voice.
