The issue

We should be encouraging public transport use - to help people be more active, to improve air quality and commute times. But not giving northbound buses a bus lane is absolute madness which will lead to longer trips for commuters and more time sitting in traffic.

All new roads should have bus and cycleways. It’s frustrating that all this money is spent on a road, but they can't stretch to a bus lane!

The newly re-developed Warringah Freeway is an essential part of Sydney’s infrastructure. However, the omission of a northbound bus lane neglects the needs of daily commuters who rely on the efficiency of public transport. This decision undermines the ideal of promoting sustainable travel solutions and actively discourages citizens from making environmentally conscious choices.

Data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) indicates that over 15% of Sydney’s workers depend on buses for their daily commute. With the expected population growth, our transport infrastructure must be adaptable and supportive of smart urban mobility. Failing to provide a dedicated bus lane will result in congestion and longer commute times, deterring people from using public transport.

A bus lane is not just an add-on; it is a necessity. By reintroducing a dedicated bus lane for northbound traffic, Sydney can lead by example, demonstrating a commitment to reducing carbon emissions, improving air quality, and enhancing the overall commuter experience. As witnessed in many global cities like London and Singapore, dedicated bus lanes have significantly reduced travel times and improved public satisfaction with transit systems.

We urge the New South Wales Department of Transport and relevant government bodies to reconsider this decision. Including a northbound bus lane on the Warringah Freeway is an investment in a sustainable future, guaranteed to reap long-term economic and environmental benefits.
