Thank you for your support of this petition to prevent the forced sale of Mangie McQueen’s land.

Please read more about the historical significance of Mangie McQueen’s career in shaping the architectural character of McCrorey Heights which was regarded in the 1950s through the early 1970s as a “premier neighborhood for Charlotte’s highly educated African American elite.”

Indeed, among his many projects, Mr. McQueen served as a contractor for construction on Dr. Reginald Hawkins’ family home which was designated by the City Council of Charlotte in 2019 as a historic landmark.

From historysouth.org:

“As their household grew, the family added to the dwelling. In 1958 Dr. Hawkins hired Mangie McQueen to construct a big new recreation room on the east side of the residence, featuring a modernistic strip window and a carport.  The room’s floor was several steps below the rest of the house, opening out at grade level into the back yard. “That rec-room was state of the art. We hadn’t seen anything so big and so grand. You know, pool table and ping pong table and shuffleboard on the floor and a bar and all of that,” Lorena recalls. “That was the talk of the town. And that’s where they [her parents] had the parties…. That was big time to have a room like that. That was unusual.””

Please continue to share this petition as we work to convince Sigmon Homes to stop the effort to force the sale of the land where Mangie McQueen built his family’s home.

Thank you,

The McQueen Family
