The Issue

To the West Haven City Council,

We, the undersigned residents of West Haven, oppose the construction of the proposed connector road between 3300 South and 3600 South, West Haven, Ut. While we understand the City’s need to  manage growth and traffic, this project will cause permanent harm to families and neighborhoods in our community.

This road would take homes and land from residents who have built their lives here. Families face losing their property through forced acquisition, a disruption that cannot be undone with compensation. Those who remain would see their privacy, peace, and safety eroded as a once quiet area is transformed into a busy traffic corridor.

The presence of constant vehicle noise, headlights, and congestion behind homes will make it impossible for families to enjoy their backyards and will lower the quality of life for all who live nearby. In addition, properties along high-traffic roads consistently lose value compared to those in quieter neighborhoods. This means the financial burden of this project will not only fall on those who lose their land, but also on families who see their home values decline.

Beyond the direct loss of property and value, this road will endanger children and pedestrians as cut-through traffic increases. What are now safe, family-oriented neighborhoods will become less secure. More broadly, this project undermines the very character of West Haven, which is valued for its rural atmosphere, open space, and family-friendly environment.

This road does not benefit West Haven residents. It facilitates for traffic flow for the benefit of Taylor and West Ogden residents, at the cost of safety, privacy, quiet and physical land of actual West Haven residents.

This road is a city level project, not a UDOT project, or even a county level project. West Haven city council has the power to put its residents first and say no to this road. West Haven city government is beholden to us as citizens of the city, and not to the county, region, or even state.

For these reasons, we respectfully petition the City Council to halt the 3300 South–3600 South connector project, reconsider its alignment, and pursue alternative solutions that do not destroy existing neighborhoods. We further ask that the City engage directly with affected residents in meaningful discussions about traffic solutions that protect homes, safety, and the character of West Haven.

West has always prided itself on a quiet farm community. Lets promote healthy city growth by finding a better way to facilitate traffic.

By signing below, we formally voice our opposition to this project and call on the City to place the well-being of its residents above the convenience of regional traffic flow.

The Decision Makers

West Haven City Mayor
Responded
[Change.org provides a tool that allows petition starters and supporters to email decision makers directly from our platform. The message below is a response from West Haven Mayor Rob Vanderwood, sent in reply to one of these emails from the petition starter. Here is the response:] As myself and the council stated in the public comment section on 8/17/2025, we share empathy with all that are involved. Mainly due to the utter miscommunications that were shared by a petition to stop a road that wasn’t in construction process by the city and some rumors that were not simply true. It is a proposal to secure land for a corridor preservation for the future. The road was established by a study that was completed years ago as a project for the county and state transportation plan. The petitioner stated it was a city only proposal, not true. Your plea to simply widen 3600 S. has been vetted and found to not be the best solution as it dead heads at 3500 S. It isn’t conducive to traffic flow. It could still be used in the future as an option. As your Westwood subdivision was required to widen it in your buildable area. 3600 S will be constructed as needed and as cost to build become available in the future. Now, your subdivision. None of your neighborhood would be in play if it weren’t for the road in question. Added density was allowed by the original developer to preserve this road. It is on the plat as recorded in 2021. You call out many items of supposed failures of the city and the endangerment of children etc. However, you purchased the home and should have been fully understood there was a 100’ road in play near and around many homes. That area is simply preserved for the future if the road is ever built. That preservation has a clock of 40 years for any funding from the state or county to build it. No construction funds or plans are in play to date. So, I realize this isn’t the answer you will like or want. But all decisions made by the council are for the betterment of the city. For those on 3600 S. They will not like it if that road gets used. For all to the west, will praise the convenience of the road for improved commute times and safety to get to the freeway etc. All causes have an effect to someone else etc. So, for full transparency to all, we are continuing to preserve land for future corridor needs for the future transportation of the city. It is a responsible thing for local governments to comply with as we plan for our future. Mayor Vanderwood
