Stop Wasting Clothes: Ban Destroying Unsold Garments
The Issue
The fashion industry is responsible for 8-10% of the world's global carbon emissions. It is having a devastating effect on the continually escalating climate crisis. According to the European Environment Agency, an estimated 4-9% of all textile products put on the market in Europe are destroyed before use, amounting to between 264,000 and 594,000 tonnes of textiles destroyed each year. But what can we do about it?
The Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) bans the destruction of unsold clothing, putting responsiblty on retailers to make production and disposal less wasteful. and was active as of July 2026. However this law is only binding to the European Union and is not implemented in the UK. This petition proposes for the British government to put this law into practice across the UK.
