The Issue

I started looking into Flock after hearing people talk about the growing "De-Flock" movement and what was being planned around October 31. At first, I thought this was just another internet controversy. Then I learned what these systems can actually do. The moment that changed it for me was realizing that you do not have to be accused of a crime, under investigation, or even suspected of doing anything wrong for your vehicle’s movements to be recorded and potentially searched later. You can simply be driving your child to school, going to church, visiting a friend, seeing a doctor, going to work, living your life. That raised the question: when did ordinary Americans agree to become part of a searchable surveillance network simply because we drove down a public road?

What kind of country are we constructing as technologies like surveillance systems, artificial intelligence, facial recognition, location tracking, and massive databases become increasingly powerful? Public safety is without a doubt important, but freedom requires limits on power. If we wait until constant tracking becomes normalized, it will be much harder to draw the line later. That is why I decided to start NO FLOCK.

Flock Safety, a company known for its license plate readers, is at the center of this controversy. According to reports, these cameras are capable of reading 500,000 vehicles per month, and the data is stored for up to 30 days, available for law enforcement to access at their discretion. This extensive data collection raises significant privacy concerns. For instance, according to a report by the Electronic Frontier Foundation, Flock's cameras have been linked to false arrests, as their data is used without proper contextualization and oversight.

Those of us concerned about privacy and civil liberties worry what message it sends if these surveillance tools are left unchecked: that everything we do, everywhere we go, could be recorded without our consent or awareness. We must ask Congress to act firmly against warrantless mass tracking and implement clear policies that protect citizens' privacy rights.

We propose strict regulations that ensure data collected is used strictly for solving crimes under judicial oversight, not as part of a mass surveillance dragnet. Additionally, transparency reports on how data is used and accessed must be mandated to ensure accountability.

Join us in urging Congress to take action and protect our civil liberties. It is time to demand accountability for the technology that is shaping our public spaces. Sign the petition and stand for privacy.
