STOP USM From hiring Dr. Lance Nail as our New Provost

STOP USM From hiring Dr. Lance Nail as our New Provost
The Issue
USM is currently seeking a new provost. There are four possible candidates. One of these candidates is Dr. Lance Nail. His finalist visit is on April 17 and 18, 2023.
We cannot allow USM to hire Dr. Lance Nail as our next Provost, and we don't want him to create hostile environments for our students.
Dr. Lance Nail has been involved in various scandals regarding the facilitation and knowledge of sexual misconduct between a professor and a student and changing a grading system without permission to privilege certain students. These activities put him under review and prompted his "quitting" or forcible resignation from Texas Tech.
Here's what you learn about him from a quick google search:
Dr. Lance Nail seemingly facilitated an opportunity for sexual misconduct/inappropriate conduct between Professor and Student.
Dr. Parisi "was also a personal friend of Dr. Lance Nail, Dean of the College and Professor of Finance."
"This investigation concluded that during that trip, Dr. Parisi subjected a female student to a 'hostile learning environment.' That student reported that Dr. Parisi touched her leg, bought her gifts, and asked male students to take photos of her and send them to him."
“KCBD obtained a copy of the joint investigation by the Dean of Students and the Office of Equal Employment Opportunity. This Title IX investigation concluded that Dr. Nail "failed in his responsibility as the Dean of the College." This report said all participants on the trip were subjected to "inappropriate behavior." These complaints were brought to Dr. Nail's attention, but the majority of students said they were concerned by his failure to address them.”
“This report concluded that "Not only was Dr. Nail the only person with full knowledge of Dr. Parisi's prior behavior, but he was also the Dean of the College and as such, the person who was responsible for making decisions about whether it was appropriate for Dr. Parisi to be on the trip. He failed in this responsibility.”

Re: Facilitating Sexual Misconduct Accusation,
Dr. Lance Nail admitted that he was aware of Dr. Parisi’s inappropriate behavior before he encouraged him to go on a summer trip, where sexual misconduct occurred. He argues his innocence based on the quantity of information he knew.
“Dr. Nail said that while he was aware of some of the inappropriate behavior, he was not made fully aware of all of Dr. Parisi's actions.”

Dr. Lance Nail was involved in a grade-changing scandal at Texas Tech.
“When a faculty panel released a “damning report” on the dean of the business school, Lance Nail, creating a separate test system for students who otherwise would have failed, Inside Higher Ed reports.”

Dr. Lance Nail “quit,” or seemingly forcibly resigned, after it was discovered he set up an inappropriate grading system in violation of university procedures.
“Texas Tech dean quits after university panel finds he inappropriately set up a system that raised several students' grades -- in violation of university procedures and behind back of professor who assigned the grades.”
"I am glad the dean is resigning. I am sorry that it has taken so long. I expected it last June when it became apparent that he was responsible for the grade changes,” Dr. Conover said.

Dr. Lance Nail said he knows he didn’t follow the grading procedures “to the letter.”
“In his statement, Lance Nail admits to not following procedures "to the letter" in changing four students' grades earlier this year.”

We will not allow our USM students to be exposed to Dr. Lance Nail's lack of care for his students.
He has proven himself to abandon students when they need him and to bend the rules for those he has chosen. We want our values at USM to be upheld.
The USM vision statement is:
"The University of Southern Mississippi aspires to be a model student-centered public research university that prepares students to thrive in a global society by providing high quality programs and transformative experiences in a community distinguished by inclusiveness." (https://www.usm.edu/university/vision-mission-values.php)
Hiring Dr. Lance Nail would reject the vision statement of the University of Southern Mississippi.
