Just weeks ago, Rec & Park told us that East lanes would be for bikes and West lanes would be for pedestrians, kids, seniors, and people with disabilities. They said safety infrastructure would arrive in 2–4 weeks and that they’d be transparent with the public about the data driving decisions.
But now, in the San Francisco Chronicle, they’ve changed their story:
They plan to allow bikes and scooters in the West lanes, the very space that was supposed to be safe for pedestrians, children, the elderly and our disabled neighbors.
- They’re installing temporary stencils and signs, but nothing multilingual.
- No flashing crosswalks or safe crossings are being planned. How will users cross safely from the fast East lanes to the slow West lanes?
- No release of the real data, they continue to hide the numbers that should guide safety decisions.
- Instead of protecting kids and families, they’re focusing on “zones” and cosmetic changes.
This is not just disappointing, it’s dangerous. Families like Vanessa’s, whose 4-year-old daughter was run over by an e-bike just one week ago, deserve more than vague promises. Seniors, disabled neighbors, and children cannot be pushed into lanes where non motorized bikes are still allowed.
We’ve been clear from the start:
✅ East lanes = bikes. West lanes = pedestrians only. Rec and Park even said that in July. Why are they backtracking?
✅ Safe crossings with flashing lights.
✅ Durable, multilingual signage on every block.
✅ Release the unaltered data.
✅ Make immediate, low-cost safety fixes NOW, painted crossings, barriers, enforcement.
Rec & Park is ignoring the community and putting people at risk. We will not let them get away with this bait-and-switch.

This is about protecting children, protecting families, protecting the elderly, protecting the disabled, and protecting lives. Sunset Dunes should be safe, not a place where we wonder who will be the next victim.
