Vanessa from Daly City shared a heartbreaking experience just two days ago, on August 10, 2025:

“My 4 yr old daughter was just run over by an electric bike here yesterday and it was the first time visiting for us. IT IS NOT SAFE. Please protect our families. Make a change. I’m so lucky she’s alive.”

This incident happened during the recent Outside Lands festival at Golden Gate Park, when over 200,000 people attended between Friday, Saturday, and Sunday of this past weekend. With so many visitors in the area, the unsafe conditions at Sunset Dunes Park become even more alarming, and dangerous.

We’ve heard from many voices like Vanessa’s, and the evidence is clear. It’s time for action,  not just promises.

Here’s what the City must do urgently:

  • Enforce Lanes and Educate the Public
Install inexpensive signs on every block that clearly explain and enforce fast and slow lane use. East lanes = bikes and West lanes = slower users like pedestrians, kids, the elderly, and our disabled neighbors.
Safe Crossings Between East and West
  • Install pedestrian signals or flashing crosswalk lights so slower users can safely cross the median.
  • Multilingual, Clear Signage on Every Block
This is a diverse neighborhood. Signs should reflect that. Everyone deserves to know how to use the park safely.
  • Transparency on Infrastructure and Data
Rec & Park said on July 2 that safety infrastructure would arrive in 2–4 weeks. Where is it?
▸ Release unaltered pedestrian and cyclist data
▸ Explain how safety decisions are being made
▸ Stop manipulating numbers to delay action
  • Low-Cost, Immediate Safety Investments

While the Prop K lawsuit looms, Rec & Park is spending on features that could be reversed. At minimum, invest in durable, inexpensive basics like signage, flashing lights, and painted crossings that protect pedestrians now.

This is about protecting children like Vanessa’s daughter, seniors, and everyone who uses Sunset Dunes Park. No family should have to risk injury or worse because of unsafe conditions.

If you care about keeping our parks safe and accessible, please add your name now and share with everyone who stands for safety.

Together, we can push decision-makers to make these lifesaving changes a reality.
