🚨 “For a cyclist to not fear that a dog or person will suddenly run in front of them…”

That wouldn’t happen if cyclists stayed in their designated East Lane.

But at Sunset Dunes Park, that’s not what’s happening. Cyclists and e-scooters regularly weave through the West Lane, what the city itself calls the “slow zone” as well as the old pedestrian paths. This puts seniors, children, and people with disabilities at constant risk.

Pedestrians shouldn’t have to walk in fear or constantly look over their shoulders in a space that’s supposed to be safe.

This week, SF Rec & Park responded again, saying:

"The ability of park users to feel comfortable, to not feel that they may be hit by a cyclist, or for a cyclist to not fear that a dog or person will suddenly run in front of them, is crucial for everyone to enjoy the park."

We agree. But that comfort and safety don’t exist right now.

Painted snails and vague future plans aren’t enough. We need real action.

Here’s what the City must do urgently:

  • Enforce Lanes and Educate the Public
  • Work with groups like the SF Bicycle Coalition and Walk SF on a multilingual education campaign that explains and enforces the designated slow and fast lanes.
  • Safe Crossings Between East and West
  • Install pedestrian signals or flashing crosswalk lights so slower users can cross safely from the East to the West side.
  • Multilingual, Clear Signage on Every Block
  • This is a diverse neighborhood, yet all the signs are in English. Everyone deserves to understand how to safely use the park.
    Transparency on Infrastructure

In a July 2 email, Rec & Park said infrastructure would be installed within 2–4 weeks depending on the vendor. What’s the status? What exactly is being installed? How will it help?

And let’s be real: there’s still an active lawsuit under Prop K. If the City is forced to reopen this space to cars, every dollar being spent now could be reversed. So why not at least invest in basic, low-cost safety infrastructure, like signs and lights?
