Petition updateStop Unsafe Conditions at Sunset Dunes Park — Restore Safety on The Great HighwayIt’s Foggy. It’s Quiet, and a Cyclist Still Can’t Follow Two Signs. Let’s Get to 500 today!

Last night, between 8:15 and 8:45 p.m. on July 10, 2025, I took a walk through Sunset Dunes Park.

It was the kind of San Francisco summer evening I love: 57°, foggy, peaceful. Barely anyone was out, just me and one male commuter cyclist heading south between Lincoln and Irving.

At the Lincoln entrance, he rode directly between the two signs that clearly say: “Bicycles → Left.” I looked at him. He smiled. I said hi. And then… he casually biked into the West Lane, the area meant for pedestrians. That’s my black jacket you see on the lower left side of the photo in today’s update.

Was it unclear? Was he ignoring the signs?

Or does this park just lack the most basic guidance people need to stay safe?

Today’s takeaway:

  • Even well-meaning people don’t know where they’re supposed to be.
  • That’s not a people problem, it’s a systems problem. And it’s fixable.

🛑 The City must act now:

  • Add visible, multilingual signage at every block
  • Clear, consistent instructions in multiple languages will help everyone, not just native English speakers.
  • Install flashing crosswalks or other ADA-compliant crossings
  • Let’s give people a safe way to move between East and West Lanes.
  • Launch a real education & awareness campaign
  • Partner with the SF Bicycle Coalition to change behaviors—especially among commuters.
  • Acknowledge the legal uncertainty

With the Prop K lawsuit unresolved, this park is technically temporary. So why are we adding hammocks and pianos before basic signs?

✊ Let’s get to 500 signatures!

We’re now at 480 signatures and 8,600+ views. Just 20 more signatures to hit our next goal.
