After the July 1, 2025 pedestrian injury at Sunset Dunes Park, the San Francisco Recreation & Park Department responded to our concerns. But their reply raised even more questions and failed to offer real solutions.

I sent two follow-up emails, on July 2 and July 5, after walking the park roundtrip from Lincoln to Sloat and seeing the conditions firsthand. The City has not responded to those two emails.

📬 What the City Said (after my first email):

“This is the first reported injury collision since the park opened… We’ve implemented signage and mode-split improvements… We’re continuing to monitor usage and will make improvements as necessary.”

They point to:

  • Locked gates (some still pending)
  • Temporary signs
  • Painted snails and minimal visual cues

🗣️ What I Said in Response (on July 2 and July 5):

“The Great Highway has existed since 1929. Before this, only one pedestrian fatality occurred in recent memory, in Dec 2024. Now, in just a few months of Sunset Dunes Park, we already have a serious pedestrian injury.”

“Despite the low injury count, the risk is high, especially for seniors and disabled users. I’ve had multiple near misses myself. I’m able to move out of the way, but not everyone can. And I shouldn’t have to keep looking over my shoulder.”

“The park should never have opened while its future is under the legal microscope.”

👣 What I Observed on July 3:

“Between 7:45–9 PM, I walked Sunset Dunes from Lincoln to Sloat. On the west side, supposedly the ‘slow’ zone, I saw a dozen cyclists, e-bikes, e-scooters, and skateboarders.”

“Only two signs were posted. The painted snails were either hard to spot or partially covered in sand. This is not a safe space for pedestrians.”

“We need flashing crosswalks, traffic control, permanent signage, and restrictions on fast users until this is truly ADA-compliant.”

👥 What Others Are Saying:

Jessi:

“In both visits to Sunset Dunes last week, I was almost hit twice by cyclists weaving around us… Bicyclists lack the courtesy of declaring ‘on your left’… They need rules, and they need to be held accountable.”

Judi:

“This is not the first incident… There have been several. Rec & Park claims that a painted snail and a bird on a skateboard with the word ‘slow’ are enough to persuade speeding bicyclists to yield. What we see with our own eyes are bicyclists yielding to no one… We are getting hurt and the City clearly couldn’t care less.”

Gautam:

“Sunset Dunes is a disaster waiting to happen… and it’s happening. I’ve seen bikers nearly run down pedestrians and children. The former auto lanes are a free-for-all. Put bikers in one lane, enforce speed limits, and make the park safe.”

Anonymous (Mother’s Day visitor):

“One of my daughters went to Sunset Dunes on Mother’s Day with her husband’s family, including a two-year-old child and an elderly great-grandmother. She told me she’ll never go again. The spandex bike riders were flying around in all lanes ‘like they are training for the Tour de France.’ She said it was outright dangerous — and this was on Mother’s Day, a time when families should feel safe being outside together.”

⚠️ Bottom Line:

The City’s response is not enough.

We are asking for:

  • Immediate restrictions on fast-moving devices in pedestrian zones
  • A safe way for pedestrians to cross from the east side to the west side
  • Permanent signage, lane markings, and physical separation
  • Transparency about park funding and emergency access
  • Real inclusion of community voices, especially seniors and disabled users
