Stop unnecessary violence against unarmed people and service animals

Stop unnecessary violence against unarmed people and service animals
The Issue
I am deeply troubled by the current laws and attitudes in Ohio which seem to permit the unwarranted use of firearms against unarmed individuals and service animals. Recently, I experienced a deeply disturbing incident in Beaverdam, Ohio, when my beloved service animal ran away and ended up in a neighbor's backyard. Instead of a neighborly conversation, I was met with hostility and threats involving a firearm. For someone like me, living with a mental illness, this was a traumatic experience.
My service animal is not just a pet; they are my support, companion, and guide in navigating daily life. The thought of losing them to such unnecessary violence is heart-wrenching. It is unacceptable that Ohio Revised Code 955.28 and section 955.261 provide individuals with the perceived right to threaten violence upon unarmed persons and innocent service animals.
Research from the Humane Society of the United States underscores the importance of service animals in our communities. They are not threats—they are lifelines. According to the American Pet Products Association, over 78 million dogs are owned in the United States, and many of them serve crucial roles in assisting individuals with disabilities.
I am calling upon the legislators of Ohio to reconsider these laws urgently. We need protections to ensure that no service animal, or any individual, faces unwarranted threats of violence. I propose that the Ohio legislature conduct an immediate review of these sections to clarify that the use of firearms should not be directed at unarmed individuals and service animals under any circumstances.
Strengthening the legal framework to protect both citizens and service animals will foster a safer, more understanding community. It is imperative that we prioritize compassion and safety over aggression and fear, particularly in situations that involve endangered service animals.
Please join me in urging Ohio lawmakers to revise these statutes and protect our service animals and community members from unnecessary harm. Your support and signatures can make a difference. Sign this petition to help promote peace, understanding, and, most importantly, safety for all in Ohio. Thank you for your compassion and action.
