The Issue

As a concerned citizen of Tulsa, I'm deeply troubled by the current situation our animal shelters are facing. Every month, over 120 dogs and 40 to 60 cats are euthanized after a short intake period of only six days. The emotional toll this takes on our community is heartbreaking, but the burden doesn't stop there. It costs taxpayers $128 or more in medication alone per euthanized animal, culminating in a staggering $275,000 or more annually. This figure doesn't account for staff resources or the cost of disposal. Beyond the financial strain, there is an ethical obligation to act.

We voted for Tulsa Code, Title 2, Chapter 1, Section 101, Item 17, which mandates spay and neuter measures and the increase in fines for not complying .However, without enforcement, the law is just words on paper. We need our elected officials to take a stand and prioritize this ordinance, holding pet owners accountable. This is not just an issue of animal rights but also one of fiscal responsibility and community health.

Implementing strict enforcement of the spay and neuter ordinance and its fines will lead to fewer animals being admitted to shelters and, consequently, fewer animals being euthanized. By doing so, we would not only save countless lives but also reduce the emotional and financial stress on our city.

The time to act is now. We owe it to the animals, to our fellow citizens, and to ourselves to ensure our laws and the fines associated with the laws are being enforced and implemented as intended. Let's unite our voices to urge the enforcement of these necessary measures.

Sign this petition to demand that our local government enforce the spay and neuter ordinance fines when owners fail to comply with the law in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Together, we can drive the change that’s desperately needed and create a safer, healthier environment for both animals and people in our community.
