In Australia, thousands of dogs are euthanized every year not because they are sick or suffering, but simply because their owners no longer want them or they are considered aggressive without a professional assessment. This must change.

In Italy, Germany, and Sweden, euthanasia is only permitted in cases of severe illness or irreversible suffering. In the Netherlands, a nationwide “no-kill” policy ensures that healthy, adoptable dogs are never euthanized. Meanwhile, in the UK, stringent guidelines require thorough behavioral and medical evaluations before any decision is made. Australia must follow these ethical standards and stop the unjustified euthanasia of healthy dogs.

We call on the Australian government to:

- Ban the euthanasia of healthy dogs without a valid medical reason.

- Require mandatory professional behavioral assessments before euthanizing a dog deemed aggressive.

- Promote adoption, rehabilitation, and rehoming programs as alternatives to euthanasia.

- Implement stricter regulations for veterinarians to ensure euthanasia is only used as a last resort.
