The Issue

In the town of Athens, Ohio, my world was turned upside down when my daughter was taken from me, not because of abuse or neglect, but because of poverty. Despite fulfilling every requirement laid out before me, I'm continuously presented with more hurdles that keep us apart. This isn't just my story—it's a pattern that has become all too familiar for many families in our region who are struggling, not with their ability to love and care for their children, but with economic hardship.

The child welfare system in the United States, and more explicitly within Athens, Ohio, is failing to protect families like mine. Human Rights Watch and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) have acknowledged this growing issue, one where poverty is misconstrued as neglect. This misinterpretation has resulted in countless children being removed from loving homes unjustly, an alarming trend that not only devastates families but erodes community trust in a system designed to protect.

Statistics show that in numerous cases across the nation, poverty is mistaken for neglect, disproportionately affecting those who are already marginalized. The very institutions that are supposed to provide aid and support are instead perpetuating cycles of hardship and suffering. This systemic misuse of power is not just an administrative error; it’s a human rights violation that fundamentally disrupts families and hinders children's well-being.

We demand accountability from Athens Child Services and other relevant authorities. We need them to differentiate between poverty and neglect, ensuring that economic status doesn't erroneously translate into incompetency as a parent. Concrete policy changes must be enacted that focus on family preservation rather than tearing them apart unnecessarily.

Join me in calling for an overhaul and reform of the child welfare system handling in Athens, Ohio, and nationwide. Stand with us to protect the integrity of families who deserve a fighting chance despite their financial circumstances.

Sign this petition to urge the necessary changes and prevent more children from being wrongfully taken from loving homes. Let's create a future where no child is separated from their parents solely based on economic hardships. With your support, we can bring about meaningful change.
