Stop University of Reading from closing the Department of Chemistry

The Issue

We, the undersigned, have concerns regarding the proposed closure of the Chemistry Department, and we deeply disagree with this change occuring. Many students, parents, and staff members disagree with this change, and we implore the university to rethink these propositions.

Our 4 main concerns with this proposed closure are as follows

LESS RESOURCES: A closure like this would mean less (or no) chemistry research occuring here, likely less staff, no masters or pHD chemistry students, and all round an environment less suited to our learning and gaining knowledge in our field. Learning alongside research students and in an environment where research is occuring is highly beneficial and paramount to our studies and immersion in our subject.

LESS FUNDING: It's clear that less money will be allocated to the subject when we no longer have a department.

DEGREE LEGITIMACY: Many students are worried about their qualification looking less impressive to potential employers when it's coming from a School of Pharmacy as opposed to a Chemistry Dempartmeny

STAFF SECURITY: We are deeply unhappy about the way staff have been treated surrounding this issue, such as not being informed of these proposed changes adequetely in advance. We worry that this closure may lead to staff cuts, and may put the job security of many of our valued lecturers and staff members at risk.
