The Issue

At Watertown High School, under the leadership of Principal Periguni, a new schedule change is being introduced that is causing a lot of distress among students. This issue hits close to home for me as my math grade was at risk—sitting at a 40—until I was able to attend Miss G’s enrichment sessions. It was through these sessions that I was able to turn my grade around, ultimately passing for the year. Many students rely on enrichment programs to improve and succeed.

The newly proposed schedule will dramatically alter the way classes are handled. Under this system, students will have the same six classes in a row over an eight-day period, followed by a two-day break before returning to those classes. This structure results in less homework time, reduced learning hours, and—with no structured opportunity for enrichment—makes it nearly impossible for students who miss classes to catch up.

This lack of flexibility can be detrimental to student success, particularly for those who may need extra help or miss school for valid reasons. Currently, enrichment periods offer a crucial opportunity for students to seek guidance, clarify doubts, and enhance understanding of difficult subjects. Removing or limiting these opportunities will create an inequitable learning environment and disadvantage those who need extra support the most.

Studies clearly demonstrate that enrichment programs and additional learning opportunities correlate with improved academic performance and student well-being. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, students who are provided with opportunities to receive personalized instruction tend to perform better in standardized assessments.

We need a schooling system that supports all students, giving them the time and resources needed to succeed. Implementing this restrictive schedule will do the opposite. I urge the Watertown community to come together and oppose this unfair schedule change.

Stand up for equitable education. Preserve the chance for all Watertown High School students to thrive by supporting the maintenance of enrichment sessions and a fair schedule. Sign this petition to show your support and demand change when it matters most.
