The Issue
As a current Section 8 tenant who recently moved from Youngstown to Akron, Ohio, I've experienced firsthand the unfair practices of landlords and property management teams in this area. My family and I, along with many others on Section 8, are being charged exorbitant fees for normal wear and tear conditions that should rightfully be the landlord’s responsibility. In Youngstown, landlords cooperated with Section 8 requirements by handling maintenance without exploiting tenants. However, in Akron, it feels like tenants are being financially squeezed and threatened with eviction unless these unjust fees are paid.
These landlords are charging tenants fees for issues that Section 8 requires them to fix, exploiting their power over tenants who are already financially burdened. Last year, I was charged a substantial fee for a plumbing issue that was known prior to my moving in, yet I was held responsible. Despite Section 8 regulations that mandate owners to maintain their properties, many landlords here choose to ignore these responsibilities. They rig repairs instead of fixing them correctly, and then blame incoming tenants for problems that should have been addressed long ago.
Moreover, some landlords have imposed baffling restrictions, such as instructing tenants not to use everyday sanitary products like tampons, creating unnecessary stress around privacy and personal hygiene. These brazen power plays are not just about money—they erode the dignity of tenants, especially vulnerable single mothers and fathers trying to make a home for their children.
We cannot continue to tolerate this behavior in Akron. It is time for local authorities and housing agencies to enforce stricter regulations and conduct regular inspections that ensure landlords comply with their responsibilities without exploiting tenants. Implementing a transparent reporting system for unfair practices would allow tenants to report abuses without fear of retaliation, protecting their right to a fair living situation.
I urge everyone who believes in fairness and justice to sign this petition. Together, we can demand a change and hold these landlords accountable. Our homes should be safe spaces where we can focus on raising our families, not battlegrounds over unfair financial burdens.
