Stop unfair demands for overpayments by Student Finance England

Stop unfair demands for overpayments by Student Finance England
The Issue

I am writing this petition out of sheer desperation and the urgent need for justice. I have always believed in the promise of education and the support systems in place to make it accessible for everyone. However, this faith has been shattered. A few days ago, I was shocked to receive a notice from Student Finance England demanding that I repay around £60,000, a colossal sum that is simply impossible for me to afford. This is all because of a supposed overpayment on my course fees at Bath Spa University.
Like many other students, I enrolled in a course designed by the university, trusting that both the institution and Student Finance England had fully approved it. Overnight, without any prior warning or explanation, my funding was halted. My entitlement was reduced to £0, and I was deemed responsible for an overpayment. The emotional and psychological toll this situation has taken on me is devastating. I am now close to completing my degree, yet this financial nightmare has left me with uncertainty and fear about my future.
This issue does not just affect me. Students from the Elizabeth School of London are facing similar demands. We chose our courses in good faith, followed the curriculum as outlined, and now find ourselves in a situation that could potentially jeopardise our educational and professional futures. It is not just unfair—it's utterly unjust.
According to recent reports, there's been a pattern of such cases. More than 500 students have reported similar issues, causing widespread distress and confusion. Students, who are already under enormous pressure, are being held accountable for administrative errors that are beyond their control. Government-backed financial support is supposed to aid us, not burden us with insurmountable debt.
We are calling on Student Finance England to immediately halt these demands for repayment and to properly investigate each case. There is a dire need for transparency and resolution. Every student affected deserves a fair review of their case, based on the merits and realities of their individual situations, rather than blanket policies that do not consider the nuances of each case.
We are also urging Bath Spa University, the Elizabeth School of London, and all relevant educational institutions to support their students and stand up against these unjust demands. Universities must work closely with funding bodies to ensure that students are protected and not subject to undue financial stress.
Your signature can make a difference. It's not just about the money—it's about accountability, fairness, and justice for students who innocently trusted the system designed to support them. Please sign this petition to stop the unfair demands for overpayments and protect the future of students whose only goal was to better themselves through education.
