The Issue

British embassies around the world are helping oil and gas firms drill new oil wells, according to an investigation by the journalists at Abolish Westminster. That's civil servants paid for by your taxes spending their time boosting the profits of companies which are driving the climate emergency. Meanwhile, BP's profits were £4.26bn between April and June. (Remember that when your gas bill comes through this winter.)

An Abolish Westminster investigation found that:

  • British diplomats in Indonesia met with BP staff 16 times in  two years as it sought controversial contracts to open up new gas fields
  • British Embassy staff in Caracas met with Shell six times in the year before the US-led coup in Venezuela
  • BP's Azerbaijani vice president for the Caspian region was appointed an honorary OBE at the British embassy in Baku
  • Embassy staff in Mauritania met with BP more than 40 times in recent years
This summer has really brought home the climate chaos wrought by big oil.
  • From the Cairngorms to Bordeaux and to Madrid and Greece, Europe is quite literally on fire. In England and Wales alone, more than 2,700 people died because of heat-related causes in May and June.

The science is clear and inarguable: the climate emergency is here and is caused by man-made activity, such as burning fossil fuels. It's time for the UK Government to stop helping these companies.

When he was energy secretary, Ed Miliband blocked new oil and gas wells in the North Sea. Now he's Foreign Secretary, he should stop diplomats pushing for them in the rest of the world, too. Tell him to stop British embassies promoting new oil and gas exploration overseas.
