The National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) in Boulder is one of the world’s leading weather and climate research institutions.

Its supercomputing facility powers the models that improve extreme weather forecasts, track hurricanes, predict aircraft turbulence, and strengthen the tools Americans rely on every day.

The Trump administration is now moving to pull this critical supercomputing facility out of NCAR as part of a broader effort to dismantle the center.

According to reporting, the computing system may be transferred to an unspecified third party, raising serious concerns about disruption, access, and America’s ability to maintain leadership in weather forecasting.

This is not a partisan issue — it’s about preparedness and public safety. NOAA relies on NCAR-developed modeling systems for next-generation forecasts. Roughly 1,500 researchers from over 500 universities depend on this computing power to improve accuracy and keep the United States competitive globally.

We call on President Donald Trump, the National Science Foundation, and members of Congress to immediately halt the removal of NCAR’s supercomputers and ensure they remain integrated with the research center’s mission.
