I live in Edmonton, specifically in the Millwoods area's Kininski Gardens, a community that many families call home. Recently, I've come to learn that the City has commenced construction of a series of three-floor townhouses right next to the local school. This decision has significant ramifications for our community, one of which is the destruction of our beloved soccer field—a vital recreational space for our children. Not only will this construction strip our children of a place to play, but it will also considerably increase traffic in an already busy area, raising serious concerns about the safety of our kids.

Back in 2007, when the proposal for these townhouses was first set forth, Kininski Gardens was less developed, and perhaps such a large-scale project seemed more fitting. However, the dynamics of our neighborhood have changed dramatically since then. We no longer have surplus land, and the community has grown, making existing open spaces like our soccer field all the more precious.

Moreover, we need to consider the light and air blockage that these three-floor buildings will pose, a point not adequately addressed by the City planners. Our community has not been given a fair opportunity to voice our concerns or participate in the decision-making process regarding this construction. This oversight threatens the well-being and security of our neighborhood.

We urge the City of Edmonton to pause the construction immediately and revisit this decision. By doing so, we can ensure that proper consultation is conducted with the affected community members, and alternative locations for this construction are explored. We must preserve the safety, recreational spaces, and overall quality of life in Kininski Gardens.
