The Issue

Yosemite National Park belongs to every American — not to whichever company has the right connections in Washington. But according to a document the National Park Service submitted to Congress, the Trump administration is considering handing over part of Yosemite to a private company so it can build a road connecting its land to a park service road for commercial development.

Interior Department officials told a Senate office the deal is a "priority," according to responses shared with The Hill. The department later told The Hill that no final decision has been made and said it would follow "established procedures to ensure appropriate coordination, transparency and public involvement consistent with federal law." But the process so far has happened almost entirely behind closed doors, with details surfacing only through leaked documents and reporting from NOTUS and The Hill.

Sen. Alex Padilla didn't mince words, calling it "the most corrupt administration in history." Mark Rose of the National Parks Conservation Association said the plan amounts to "an attack on the American people that own this national park."

Yosemite isn't a real estate asset to be traded away for a private company's convenience. It's a place millions of families visit, a home to irreplaceable wildlife, and a promise we make to future generations that some places stay protected no matter who's in power. That promise shouldn't depend on which company has a well-connected lawyer.

Congress and the Department of the Interior need to hear, loudly, that the public will not accept giving away national park land in a backroom deal. Sign the petition to stop the Yosemite land swap now — before more of our shared public lands quietly disappear.
