The Issue

In South Milwaukee, where the average household budget is already feeling the strain, the recent announcement by the city to raise water bills by 22.29% is troubling and disappointing. For many families, this increase is not just an inconvenience; it translates directly into daily sacrifices. Children may miss out on simple joys like playing in sprinklers or splashing around in kiddie pools during the summer. Even tending to flowers or vegetable gardens, which bring beauty and sustenance, could become a luxury. However, for numerous households in our lower-middle-class community, the increased cost means an even more daunting reality. Essential activities such as cooking, cleaning, doing laundry, or simply using the restroom at home may become financially challenging.

The city has justified this increase by pointing to temporary projects, including replacing lead service lines for 1,200 homes and a transmission line on Michigan Ave. Yet, this comes on the heels of a significant 41% permanent price hike in 2019, also intended for temporary projects. It feels as though temporary solutions are becoming permanently high expenses for citizens, without a clear path toward cost management or relief.

Rather than incrementally burdening residents with another hefty bill, we need the city to consider more sustainable and cooperative alternatives. We propose that the city explore partnerships with neighboring communities to share costs and resources. This collaboration could potentially lead to more innovative and efficient solutions, reducing expenses and increasing transparency in how public funds are utilized.

Joining forces with surrounding communities could create a shared responsibility for infrastructural improvements, benefiting all parties involved and lessening financial pressures on individual municipalities like ours.

We call on the city officials of South Milwaukee to halt the imminent water bill increase and to actively seek collaborative solutions that protect its citizens from financial strain while ensuring safe and reliable water infrastructure.

Support this petition to prevent further financial burdens on South Milwaukee residents and advocate for greater transparency and efficiency in managing our community’s resources.
