Stop the Valley North Transmission Line Project in Berkeley County, WV
The Issue
We, the undersigned workers, residents, and supporters of Berkeley County, WV specifically and WV generally, stand united in opposition to the proposed Valley North Transmission Line Project.
The people and land of West Virginia has long been a target of exploitation and neglect. For generations, the workers and our families have been subjected to relentless extraction and disregard. From Blair Mountain to Berkeley County, the workers have always had to fight for better conditions and better lives.
Mountaintop removal scarred the land with exploding pipelines and flooding communities. Profiteering corporations automated or sent jobs overseas for cheaper labor, leaving West Virginians impoverished. The opioid epidemic has harmed countless families throughout the country, especially in our state, with no real consequences to the pharmaceutical companies that caused it.
Last year, Governor Morrisey signed HB 2014 which severely limits the people and county government from stopping or regulating data center construction, which is already happening in our county and has been happening through the state. Now, they want to take more of our land, harm more families, all to provide power not only to far-away data centers, but also force tax payers and rate payers to foot the bill!
According to the power grid operator, PJM, these lines will overwhelmingly be used to power data centers: tech millionaire and billionaire ventures, which will take our data and use it against us. If these get built, WE bear the brunt of the cost: environmentally, financially, digitally and to our health.
This petition is only one tool that we will use to resist this overreach into our community. We, the people of Berkeley County and Martinsburg, will bring this petition to the County Commission. We will talk with small business owners and our neighbors. We will do the research and learn about the impacts these lines will bring. We'll meet, we'll discuss, we'll work together, and we'll stop the Valley North Transmission Line!
