STOP the use of Roundup in Sunnyvale Parks

STOP the use of Roundup in Sunnyvale Parks
The Issue
The City of Sunnyvale, CA currently uses Round Up, a known carcinogen in its parks. Round Up has been banned in dozens of California municipalities due to the cancer causing chemical, glyphosate. A new formulation of Round Up, introduced in 2024, excludes glyphosate, but has a composition of 4 chemicals that is 45x more toxic than the original, per Friends of the Earth. Round Up has been the subject of tens of thousands of lawsuits across the country and has had claims settled by Bayer in excess of $10.9B. To ban the use of Round Up and other hazardous chemicals in Sunnyvale parks requires a vote of the City Council. A city study is planned, but will not be concluded until June 2026. Given the hazardous nature of Round Up, we request that this study be expedited and that City Council vote by July 2025, to ban Round Up. Round Up is a hazard to employees using it (and a potential huge liability for the City), and to our children, pets and all who use our parks. It also enters our water systems and is deadly to insects such as Monarch butterflies. If Sunnyvale supports green initiatives and advises us to watch what goes in the sewers because they flow to the Bay, it should discontinue the use of Round Up and other herbicides immediately.
