To lend a hand to a fantastic community clean-up volunteering effort in Hiroshima port, I did a solo clean up today and saw once again the devastation of the styrofoam (polystyrene), tubes and discs of the oyster industry which make up the majority of the plastic on all of our area's beaches.
It was nice to chat about plastic issues and my personal targets for how to reduce my plastic consumption too. See the video here if you would like.
After that video, a local jogger stopped by to chat and to say "thank you" for helping the local community clean - very sweet! He joined me for a little cleaning while we chatted about Hiroshima life and the plastic problem but in a casual and friendly way. It was lovely to have some company, but I also think it is these interactions that can lead to so much positive change and raised awareness. He is now curious about why I am interested in the issue and that may lead to a change in thinking.
