This month (September 2023) the Nippon Foundation and the Ministry of the Environment in Japan are coordinating AUTUMN cleanup events along rivers and beaches in Japan as a part of the 2050 Green Sea targets. Web link.
The website says that 80% of the ocean plastic pollution comes from the land and cities through the rivers to the oceans, but that is not true and there is other misleading information on the website as detailed below:
MISINFORMATION
Point 1 - MOST does not come from INDIVIDUALS but from OYSTER and FISHING Anyone who does beach and river cleanups in the Hiroshima area (as well as other parts of Japan and around the world) knows that the statistic above that 80% comes from individual use in cities to be inaccurate
MOST of the pollution collected is from the Oyster and Fishing industry, put directly into the water by these industries every day by the thousands.
Point 2 - Why is ALL of the responsibility only on individuals? Where is the company responsibility for change? We know that MOST of the pollution is deliberately being put into the water by companies working in the oyster, eel, and fishing industry yet the information always appeals only to individual consumers to change and gives no information about how companies (the biggest part of the problem) are making efforts and targets for change.
Point 3 - we do not want PLASTIC back in the ocean even reused plastic
One of the strategies in the information is to utilize REUSABLE PLASTIC but this is NOT a good idea- whether it is virgin plastic OR reused plastic, we want to keep it OUT OF THE OCEAN not plan to put more in. The target for 2050 should be for biodegradable, natural and safe materials to be allowed to be put into the ocean for use with the oyster, fishing, water tourism, and other ocean-related industries.
Point 4 - 2050 is too late! We want meaningful change to a zero-plastic ocean target in Japan by 2030!!
The target to change by 2050 is too late- we need change as soon as possible and need to be making the hard choices now to reduce plastic put into the oceans within the next 6 years, NOT 26 years!! We have solutions even within Japan of industries choosing to change to wood, rope, metail reusable baskets and natural materials from plastic in order to improve their branding and commitment to society as well as the environment which helps them gain more loyal consumers.

情報の中には、再利用可能なプラスチックを利用するという戦略もあるが、これは良い考えではない。バージン・プラスチックであれ、再利用プラスチックであれ、私たちはそれを海に入れないようにしたいのであって、これ以上海に入れるつもりはない。2050年の目標は、牡蠣、漁業、水上観光、その他の海洋関連産業で使用するために、生分解性があり、自然で安全な材料を海に投入することを許可することであるべきだ。
ポイント4：2050年では遅すぎる！私たちは、2030年までに日本の海をプラスチックゼロの目標に変えることを望んでいる！
2050年までに変化させるという目標は遅すぎる。一刻も早く変化が必要であり、26年ではなく、6年以内に海洋に投入されるプラスチックを削減するために、今、厳しい選択をする必要がある！日本国内でも、プラスチックから木材、ロープ、金属製の再利用可能なバスケットや天然素材への転換を選択し、ブランド力を高め、社会と環境へのコミットメントを高めることで、より忠実な消費者を獲得している産業がある。
