As an Indian deeply concerned for the welfare of my fellow citizens, I find myself unable to ignore the dangers that threaten our health and environment. The import of machinery and patents from a closed Italian PFAS factory by Viva Lifesciences—a subsidiary of Laxmi Organic Industries—poses a severe risk to thousands, if not lakhs, of Indians, including future generations. It is a matter of utmost urgency that we address this issue to safeguard our nation's wellbeing.

In June 2025, former Miteni executives were convicted over contamination linked to the plant, in a first-instance ruling widely seen as a landmark for environmental justice in Europe. The factory left behind the contamination of one of Europe’s largest aquifers, affecting more than 350,000 people across the provinces of Vicenza, Verona and Padua through the drinking water. Miteni’s workers were worst affected. The factory’s equipment was dismantled, shipped and reassembled in Lote Parshuram, south of Mumbai.  Its purpose remained the same: producing Pfas. And the facility faces political scrutiny due to the lack of specific PFAS regulations in India.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are synthetic chemicals that have been linked to a host of health problems, including cancer, liver damage, and developmental issues in children. These substances are often referred to as "forever chemicals" because of their persistence in the environment and accumulation in the human body over time. The World Health Organization and various environmental agencies have repeatedly warned about the dangers of PFAS, emphasizing the need for stringent regulation and reduction of exposure.

The purchase of this hazardous machinery by Laxmi Organic Industries is not just a reckless business decision; it is an impending public health crisis. By bringing this machinery to India, the company is amplifying the threat these chemicals pose to our communities, our children, and our environment.

We cannot stay silent while our health and the future of our country's children hang in the balance. It is critical that the Indian government take immediate action to halt the import of these hazardous assets. By preventing this machinery from performing the same cruel episode as in italy in our india, we can protect countless lives and take a stand against corporate practices that place profit above people.
