Stop the unfair racism/bias in homework club, Haileybury NT
The issue
As the students of Haileybury who were witnesses of this event, we urgently call for an end to unfair bias and racism within our educational institution. It is our collective responsibility to foster an inclusive and respectful environment that values diversity and promotes equality.
On the 6th of March, 2024 at about 3:30, we sat with a group of students who faced unfair bias and racism because fo a certain teacher. We would just like the Haileybury community to know about this unfortunate event, and think about the students it impacted.
- A few students from year 7 were slightly misbehaving, and another student was doing nothing wrong. Students were making distracting noises and were told to stop, and surely they put an end to the distracting unessecary noises.
- One student was doing nothing wrong, and was just about to sit down at a table to do work. A teacher saw him with his laces untied, and told him to tie them up. This student said he would as soon as he sat down, but the teacher started harrasing him and for some reason got very harsh about it. We, as witnesses, believe that this was because of his race, and the victim, as a minority, also believed this was true. He said he had experienced unfair scenarios before from the same teacher.
A few minutes later, while a student was doing their work, forgot to put their volume down while they were answering questions on Education Perfect. They had just started, and the teacher rushed back and told 4 students to leave the room. These 4 students had just experienced confirmation bias and the halo effect.
In Australia, we are trying to achieve equality and stop dividing the country by race. If this doesn't stop, some students and parents will feel uncomfortable about coming to homework club.
Ultimately and urgently, we need to stop this unfair bias and racism at Haileybury.
